The British Masters

Published: 25 September 2008

It felt like winter at the Belfry this week for the British Masters. Waterproofs were required on the putting green to keep out the cold winds that were blowing across Sutton Coldfield.

From a product point of view the prototype shaft Darren Clarke has been using proves to create interest amongst the other players. I made up putters for both David Horsey and Ignacio Garrido this week with the same specially weighted shaft. Darren Clarke also asked for the same shaft in another head, the Callie f, for him to take and try in practice.

The new SWS (Shaft Weighting System) will be launched commercially by Yes Golf at the Munich Golf Trade Show in 10 days time. I’m sure it will be a success with the public as it has been with the tour players.

I met and worked with Alex Noren again this week, following on from the work we did at Cologne. He was happy with the changes we made in Germany and was looking to build on those. Also met with Mark Foster and Ollie Fisher as per usual to keep a check on their progress.

On the Tuesday I also arranged to meet Bradley Dredge and to test some putters on my new high speed cam. We had sent Bradley some centred shafted options to try the week before, on his week off, after he had phoned me. He had also tested some other putters. He narrowed it down to 2. Another manufacturer’s and our Emma. He had made a conscious decision to switch recently as felt he needed to roll the ball better. The Emma came out on top. The video evidence convinced Bradley and he will be using that putter this week. Interestingly you can see Bradleys C Groove ball roll footage below filmed at 300 frames per second. That’s all from the Belfry, next week it’s St Andrews for the Dunhill Links Trophy
