Why is it important to be fitted for a putter?

First of all, let’s consider the components of putter fitting and how they can effect the stroke

The main components of a putter fitting included

  • Length
  • Lie
  • Loft
  • Putter Balance
  • Putter Style

Ever wondered what is effect overlooking such factors has?

It's important for the golfer that the length of the putters help them set up in their proper posture. If a putter is too long or too short it can cause issues at set up which in turn produce errors in the stroke. The correct length to help constrain the individual into their correct set up will help create consistency in the stroke through improving distance and directional control.

Lie angle is a small factor in controlling the direction the ball travels. In extreme situations, when you consider the loft of the putter, if the toe of the putter is sticking up in the air, the ball can be pulled to the left or the axis of the balls roll be tilted right to left. The opposite happens if the toe of the putter is down and the heel is up in the air, the ball can be pushed to the right or the axis of the balls roll be tilted to the right. An incorrect lie angle can also cause a slightly less solid hit and energy transfer which can lead to poor distance control. A poorly fitted lie angle can also cause misalignment at set up.

The correct loft will help control the distance a putt is hit. Too much loft will cause the ball at impact to be launched off the ground then bounce and skid too along the green. It’s difficult with the naked eye to see this bounce but it will make it harder to consistently control the distance your ball travels. Too little loft and you will compress the ball into the ground, which has the same negative side effects. Special equipment can determine your putter’s ideal loft and whether or not your hands are ahead of the putter head at impact (de-lofting the putter) or if your hands are behind the putter head at impact (increasing the putter’s loft).

Every putter's head design and style can potentially can help or hinder players putting potential. For instance, a golfer who does not consistently hit the putt on or near the centre of the putter face could benefit from a putter design with a much bigger sweet spot or MOI (Moment of Inertia). A player can also have a certain stroke pattern that will produce a specific launch condition. Fitting the correct head style for that player can improve launch conditions and as a consequence their ball roll. Finally, certain styles or features can effect a players putter face alignment. Do you best aim a putter with lines on or with no lines, or does offset help your alignment? Using specific analysis tools we are able to ascertain the correct putter style for each individual.
