Putting Coach at the Castello Masters

Published: 22 October 2009

It was the last strokeplay event in mainland Europe for me this week. The venue was Club de Campo Mediteraneo for the Castello Masters, near Valencia.

It is also an important event for many of the players, as it will be one of the last events for those trying to gain their tour cards between now and the race to Dubai, as the fields are limited due to co-sanctioned events.

Two such players with no worries about their tour cards are Thomas Bjorn and Darren Clarke. Both players were in the field this week and I met up with them both to continue the work of recent weeks.

Darren had made a big improvement since last week and although the results haven’t shown yet, they will do if he can keep patient and continue with the structure we have put into place. One of the keys we have worked on with Darren is to improve his strike and just as importantly consistency of strike. This has fundamentally been achieved through set up and a focus on how his shoulders work during the stroke.

Thomas this week has gone back to ‘Long Putter’ that he has used successfully before. The switch was to bolster his confidence which has been missing with the shorter putter.

We spent some time on the SAM system with the long one. The data was good and all Thomas has to do is focus on his rhythm and timing and he should start to find the hole more frequently than he has been doing.

David Horsey and Ollie Fisher are also in the field this week. Ollie has hit some form and was pleased with a top 12 performance in Portugal last week. His putting stats were impressive with 28 putts per round that has put him in a great position to secure his card.

Hopefully he will do the business this week to get his playing privileges for next year and then from there believe it will be onwards and upwards. Ollie changed full swing coach a few months back to Peter Cowan and the work they have done has been great for him.

From a product perspective Gary Murphy was looking for a back up to his Sandy SWS 150g putter he has been using. Klas Erickson picked up a Hannah. David Drysdale picked up an Abbie I had made for him at a slightly heavier swingweight than his existing Abbie. This was to help David on slower greens.

My next event know will be Hong King in a few weeks, which will also be a my last event for the season.
