Putting Coach reports from Gleneagles

Published: 30 August 2009

The tour moved on to Gleneagles this week for the Johnny Walker Championship. As per usual for this event the weather during the practice days was typically Scottish, wind and rain, which made things a little bit more difficult.

Despite the poor weather we still had a busy couple of days. On Tuesday I made up the new Dawn model with no sight line and 2 thumb grip for Stephen Leaney.

I also spent some time with Ross McGowan as we had made an old Victoria head, which has the plane silver face, and a SWS for him. We tested the different weights and he settled on the 100g and Karakal oversized grip. It was a seriously 'pimped' and nice looking putter, could have kept it myself.

Also spent some time with Barry Lane with the SWS, as he had been using a prototype SWS in a Dawn. He loved the better feel of the finished SWS product and settled on the Dawn with 150g weight.

Early on Wednesday morning in the teaming down rain I also spent some time with Michael Lundberg on the Donna SWS and a standard Victoria 2. He was intrigued with the Donna SWS and kept hold of it to practice with until I can get a Victoria 2 SWS to him next week. However he will be using the standard Vic 2 this week.

There seems to be some interest building up in the SWS now, as more and more guys use it, it catches the other player's attention. The putter also has a great 'swinging' feel to it.

Whilst up at Gleneagles I caught up with David Howell, with whom I periodically do work with. David is great exponent on the greens and knows his own stroke very well.

However it's good to go over things and I was there to give him some feedback and advice. As always it was great to work with him. I really like his approach and level of thinking. David hasn't been having too good a time of it, of late, but hopefully he can stay clear of the injuries that have plagued him, and he can get the type form back that saw him beat Tiger down the stretch at the HSBC a few years ago.

I also met with Taco Remkes this week to see how he has progressed since his first visit to the studio a couple of weeks ago. Taco has used the belly putter in the last couple of seasons but wanted to go back to the short putter. However Taco has suffered from the yips with the short putter in the past so one of things we have worked was to help him with a grip change. In particular Taco has adopted the 'Pen grip' which has had good effect. He was looking much better.
