Johnny Walker Classic

Published: 28 August 2008

A very busy couple of day at Gleneagles. It was great to catch up with Darren Clarke and congratulate him on his win last week in Holland. Since he picked up a ‘Callie’ with a prototype shaft and weighting system he has seen a return to form on the greens.

His win, using the putter, has created lot of interest. Darren himself told me he felt that he was able to put a more stable and consistent stroke on the ball due to the unique weighting of the shaft. Let’s hope both the shaft and the player make the Ryder cup team come Sunday!

I also spent some time with David Howell on the green this week. David has been struggling a little and wanted to check he was getting back to the principles he likes to see in his stroke. Using a new high speed camera I had with me this week, we analysed his ball roll and stroke and it was looking good.

Through chance I also spent a little time with Simon Wakefield. Simon was complaining of struggling with cutting across the ball. We worked on a few simple things at setup which seemed to do the trick. This also raised a putter fitting issue. In the process Simon took a liking to the ‘Donna’ putter so we had one bent to 73 degree lie angle for him, to help him achieve what we wanted at address. He was happy.

Simon Dyson was also here this week so we spent some time together, continuing where we left off last week. After 8 missed cuts out of 11, last week’s performance in Holland was a welcome return to form. This week I brought with me a ‘Donna’ with a 400g head weight that Simon had ordered. I built this to 32.45 inches with a ‘2 Thumb Feeltec’ prototype grip for him, which helped him with the grip we were working on.

Interestingly, the ‘Donna’ will be one of the most used putters in play this week with 7 guys using it. Graeme Storm picked one up along with Simon, Jose Manual Lara, Carlos Rodiles, Simon Wakefield, Michael Lundberg and Joost Luiten.

Maarten Lafaber was also in the field so we arranged to meet up and see how he was progressing. We got Maarten on the SAM to monitor his progress from the last time we worked together, it showed his improvement but also highlighted the work needed to move forward.

Finally late on Wednesday Barry Lane also asked for some advice. So we spent some time together and I gave him a few things to work on.

So a very busy couple of days despite the poor weather. The next event I will be at is Cologne in a few weeks time.
